Growing Matters Garden Program

Volunteer Opportunities with the Growing Matters Garden Program

Volunteers are a very important part of our educational gardening program! If you are interested in volunteering, there are many ways you can help, including:

Community Volunteer Night

garden volunteer night

Come lend a hand, meet new people, and learn about organic gardening at our community volunteer nights.

Join us at our main garden (2119 N Westnedge) every Wednesday evening, May through September. We gather and garden from ~6:30 - 8:00 pm. Family, friends, and neighbors are welcome to join us, too!

Woodward School Garden Night

Help us keep Woodward's school garden going all summer long. Join us as we pull weeds, plant seeds, and harvest (and occasionally eat) what the garden grows for us.

Join us at Woodward Elementary School's Roots of Knowledge Garden (corner of Stuart and North Streets) every Tuesday evening, June through August. We gather and garden from 7:00 - 8:00 pm. Family, friends, and neighbors are welcome to join us, too!

Master Gardener Opportunities

volunteer help

If you are a Master Gardener working towards basic certification or recertification, you can count the time that you volunteer with Growing Matters Garden as personal choice hours.

For details about our Master Gardener volunteer opportunities, please visit the Kalamazoo County Master Gardener website.

VolunTeen Opportunities

The Growing Matters Garden program is proud to work with the Volunteer Center of Greater Kalamazoo to offer volunteer opportunities for local youth. Area teens are welcome to help as a garden teacher assistant, garden maintenance assistant, or farmers' market assistant.

To learn more, please contact us or visit the Volunteer Center of Greater Kalamazoo website.

College Student Internships

intern at garden

We strive to create opportunities to learn and grow at our urban educational gardens. Every year, the Growing Matters Garden program provides engaging and valuable work experience for college students through our Garden Internship positions. We are currently accepting applications for the 2010 growing season. You can download a copy of our internship description and application package or email for more information. Applications are due by April 23, 2010.

Where to find local foods: These are our favorite websites for information on Michigan farmer's markets, orchards, U-Pick farms, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, maple syrup producers, creameries, cider mills, wineries, and more.
